What is ballot measure 7B?
Ballot measure 7B would extend the term limits for the District Attorney for the 17th Judicial District (Adams & Broomfield Counties) from two consecutive terms to three consecutive terms.
The current term limit for the District Attorney in Adams & Broomfield Counties is two terms. Extending it to three terms would provide greater stability for the community, as our neighboring jurisdictions have done.
Our neighboring jurisdictions give their District Attorneys three terms. This includes the Denver District Attorney, the Weld County District Attorney and the Boulder District Attorney. ​
Passage of measure 7B would bring the DA's terms into alignment with all other countywide elected offices in Adams County and most other DA's Offices in the area. Vote Yes on 7B!
Why should I vote in favor of 7b?
The District Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer for Adams and Broomfield Counties and oversees an office of 240 employees, including 90 attorneys, as well as 30,000 criminal cases a year. This is a very specialized role that requires experience to do it well. Allowing a District Attorney to serve for three terms provides stability for the District Attorney’s Office and for the community at large. Programs that the DA is leading – such as combatting violent crime or addressing domestic violence – can continue uninterrupted if the DA serves three terms instead of two.

Often a District Attorney has worked many years in the office before being elected District Attorney. Three terms would allow a District Attorney to fulfill the promises he or she makes to the community, some of which cannot be accomplished in a short time. It also would promote community safety and stability for all of Adams and Broomfield Counties.
Given significant problems like violent crime, fentanyl, and domestic violence, it is important to have a District Attorney with experience to address challenging public safety issues. The District Attorney is the chief law enforcement officer for the community and oversees an office of 240 employees and 30,000 criminal cases a year, but is currently limited to two terms. The District Attorney position is a specialized role requiring extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system, law and public policy. Allowing voters to elect a District Attorney for up to three terms provides stability for the District Attorney’s Office and the community at large. It would also provide continuity and stability for anti-violence programs seeking to make the community safer.

In Adams County, all elected offices – including County Commissioner, Sheriff, Clerk & Recorder, and Treasurer – permit voters to re-elect the office holder up to three terms. Only the District Attorney is currently limited to two terms. Our neighboring judicial districts – including Denver County, Weld County and Boulder County -- permit voters to re-elect their District Attorneys up to three terms. Passage of 7B would bring the District Attorney’s term limits into alignment with all other county-wide offices as well as the district attorneys in neighboring judicial districts. And it would provide stability and enhance public safety for the 17th Judicial District as a whole.
Will voters ultimately decide whether a District Attorney serves one, two or three terms?
Yes! Voters decide in each election who to vote in as the District Attorney. This ballot measure would allow voters to re-elect a District Attorney for up to three terms if they choose to do so.
